49 Civilians, 15 Soldiers Killed In Mali - Military Authorities

At least 49 civilians and 15 soldiers were killed when self-proclaimed jihadists attacked a military base and a boat in northeastern Mali on Thursday, the interim government said.

  D. C - Several others were also injured, according to the announcement which was read on television where the information shows that this number is temporary.

Rebels attacked a boat carrying civilians on the flood plains between the towns of Gao and Mopti during the rainy season.

The ship was traveling from Gao when the attack took place.

The attackers also attacked a military base in the Bourem Circle area in the northeast of Mali.

About 50 attackers were killed in retaliation, and three days of mourning were declared, the interim government said.

Mali is one of the West African countries that are suffering from violence related to the Al Qaeda and IS groups that have gained a foothold in the North of the country since 2012.

The fighters won and spread in the Sahel region and the West African countries on the coast, despite the huge amount of money that the international community provides to support the country's army.

Thousands of people have been killed and more than six million displaced across the Sahel region south of the Sahara desert.

Frustration over growing insecurity has led to military coups in Mali and Burkina Faso since 2020 - four of eight coups in West and Central Africa in the past three years.
